How Long Is Form I-693 Valid?

This is one of the most confusing parts of the immigration medical exam because many websites still repeat older guidance.

USCIS updated policy on June 11, 2025 and says that Form I-693 signed on or after November 1, 2023 remains valid only while the related immigration application is pending.

What that means in practice

The form does not work like a simple fixed two-year expiration the way many older pages still describe. Its validity depends on the signed date and whether your related immigration application is still pending.

That is one reason filing timing matters so much.

Why you still should not do the exam too early

Even with the updated validity policy, you still do not want to complete the exam without a filing plan. Form editions, timing, and case strategy still matter.

What to confirm with the office

Before booking, make sure the office is using the current form edition and understands the current USCIS filing rules. That reduces the chance of having to repeat the exam because of outdated office procedures.

Common questions

Does Form I-693 expire after two years?

That older rule is still repeated online, but it does not describe the current USCIS policy for forms signed on or after November 1, 2023.

Should I do the exam long before filing?

Usually no. It is better to time the exam to your actual filing plan, especially because USCIS generally now expects Form I-693 with Form I-485.

Why do different websites say different things?

Because many immigration medical pages have not been updated after the more recent USCIS policy changes.
